Lead magnet funnel template

The funnel most email lists start with. Trade one useful thing for an email address, then let a short sequence do the selling.

This page contains paid links to Systeme.io. We may earn a commission if you sign up through them. Disclosure.

A lead magnet funnel gives away something small and useful in exchange for an email address. It is the cheapest funnel to run and the easiest to test, which is why it is usually the first one worth building.

  1. Trafficpost, bio link, ad
  2. Opt-in pageheadline + form
  3. Thank-you pagedeliver + one next step
  4. 5-email sequencevalue, then offer
  5. Paid offeryour product or service

Choose a lead magnet people actually want

The freebie should solve one narrow problem quickly and point naturally at what you sell. Good formats are short, because people opt in when they expect a fast win.

FormatWorks well forTime to make
Checklist or cheat sheetAny how-to topicAn afternoon
Template or swipe fileBusiness, marketing, designA day
Short video lessonSkills that need showingA day
Quiz with results by emailCoaching, health, personal topicsA few days
Free mini-course (3 to 5 emails)Courses and membershipsA few days

Test the idea before you build it: post the title as a question in your community or on social media and see if people ask for it.

Opt-in page outline

Keep it to one screen on a phone if you can.

  • Headline: the result, in their words. "The 12-ingredient Sunday meal-prep list" is clearer than "Meal-Prep Mastery".
  • Subhead: who it is for and how fast it works.
  • Three bullets: what is inside.
  • Form: email only, or first name and email. Every extra field costs sign-ups.
  • Button: say what happens. "Send me the list" beats "Submit".
  • Privacy line: one sentence on what you will send and that they can unsubscribe.

Remove the site menu and footer links. The page has one job.

Thank-you page that sells

Most people waste this page. The visitor has just said yes, so give them the freebie and one next step:

  1. Confirm what happens now ("Check your inbox for the list" or a download button right here).
  2. One short paragraph introducing your paid offer or a low-price starter product.
  3. A single button. This is where a tripwire offer fits.

The five-email follow-up

Write all five before launch and send them as an automated sequence, one a day or every other day.

  1. Delivery (immediately): the link, plus one tip for using it today.
  2. Quick win (day 1): a short lesson that gets them a result.
  3. Story (day 2 or 3): why you care about this problem, or a common mistake and how to avoid it.
  4. Offer (day 4): introduce the paid product, what it includes, the price and who it is not for.
  5. Last call (day 5 or 6): answer the top objection and repeat the link.

After that, move them onto your regular newsletter. Our email automation basics guide covers tags and rules.

Build it on a free plan

On Systeme.io's free plan the funnel builder includes opt-in and sales funnel templates, and an opt-in can tag the contact and start an email sequence without any third-party connection, per Systeme.io's features page. The free plan allows 3 sales funnels, so one lead magnet funnel leaves two for later. The free plan's pricing FAQ also lists 1 automation rule and 1 email campaign, so plan one clean sequence rather than several.

Numbers to watch

  • Opt-in rate: leads divided by page visitors. Measure it per traffic source, because a warm audience and a cold ad behave very differently.
  • Email engagement: opens and clicks on email 1 tell you if delivery works; clicks on email 4 tell you if the offer interests them.
  • Sales per 100 leads: the number that decides whether the funnel pays. Plug yours into the funnel calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good opt-in rate?

It varies so much by traffic source and offer that any single benchmark misleads. Measure your own baseline for a week, then change one thing (usually the headline) and compare.

Should I ask for a first name?

Only if you will use it. It lets you personalize emails, but each extra field tends to reduce sign-ups. Start with email only and test adding the name later.

Do I need double opt-in?

It is not required in every country, but it keeps fake and mistyped addresses off your list. Check the rules where your subscribers live.
