Tripwire funnel template
A small first purchase changes how people see you. Here is how to structure a tripwire, add a bump and an upsell, and check the numbers.

A tripwire is a low-priced product offered right after someone opts in or discovers you. The goal is not profit on the tripwire itself; it is turning a lead into a customer, because someone who has bought once is far more likely to buy again.

What makes a good tripwire
- Specific and fast: a template pack, a short workshop recording, a recipe plan, a spreadsheet.
- Clearly worth more than the price: the buyer should feel it was a bargain.
- A natural first step toward your main offer: the tripwire solves part one; the main product solves the rest.
- Deliverable instantly: download or members area, nothing shipped.
The checkout and order bump
An order bump is a checkbox on the checkout page: "Add the companion workbook for a small extra amount." It works because it needs no new decision page. Keep it closely related to the tripwire and priced well below it.
The one-click upsell
After payment, the buyer sees one offer page. Because their card is already on file with your payment processor, they can say yes with one click. Offer the next logical step, such as the full course after a single workshop, and always show a clear "No thanks" link that goes straight to their purchase.
The math that decides if it pays
A tripwire funnel is judged on average order value (AOV), not the tripwire price. Here is example arithmetic with made-up round numbers, not a benchmark:
| Item | Example |
|---|---|
| Buyers of a $9 tripwire | 100 |
| Take an order bump of $7 (30 of 100) | +$210 |
| Take a one-click upsell of $47 (10 of 100) | +$470 |
| Revenue | $900 + $210 + $470 = $1,580 |
| Average order value | $15.80 |
Card fees come off each charge. Stripe's standard US rate is 2.9% + 30¢ per successful card charge, so on a $9 charge the fixed 30¢ alone is more than 3% of the price. Our funnel calculator includes bumps, upsells, refunds and card fees.
Build it free on Systeme.io
Systeme.io lists one-click upsells and order bumps in its funnel builder, with Stripe and PayPal connections and 0% Systeme.io transaction fees on all plans, including free. Two limits to know on the free plan: the pricing FAQ lists 3 sales funnels, and Systeme.io's help center says free accounts have a $10,000 lifetime sales limit, with a warning banner at $8,000, after which payment pages stop accepting sales until you upgrade.
Keep it honest
- Do not invent scarcity: no countdown timers that reset, no "only 3 left" for a digital product.
- Show the full price before checkout, including any recurring charge.
- Honor refunds promptly and say how to request one.
Frequently asked questions
How much should a tripwire cost?
Low enough to be an easy yes and high enough to cover card fees with room to spare. Many creators choose a single-digit or low double-digit price, but the right number depends on your audience and what the product is worth.
Should every funnel have an upsell?
No. Add one after the core funnel converts. An upsell that does not fit the first purchase annoys buyers and can raise refunds.
Is a countdown timer allowed?
A real deadline is fine. A timer that restarts for every visitor or a fake limited quantity is misleading.
